Walking Against the Wind: Trusting God's Promises in the Storm

Updated: Oct 29

Some days feel like walking straight into a storm. The resistance is relentless, the progress slow. You pray, you push, and still the wind feels strong against your face. For many of us waiting on God’s promises — whether for a husband, a child, or a long-prayed-for dream — it can feel as though nothing is ever going to change. The days blend into weeks, the weeks into months, and before long you start to wonder if the season will ever end.

This morning, walking along the seafront with my dog Holly, the wind was fierce. Every step forward felt like a battle. My hair whipped across my face, my eyes watered, and Holly trotted happily ahead, completely unbothered. She seemed to find joy in what I found exhausting — leaping into the gusts as if they were a game. As I leaned into the wind, frustrated at how hard it felt just to move forward, I felt God whisper to my heart, “Keep walking. The wind will shift.”

Sunflowers and butterflies with the words ‘Keep walking, the wind will shift’ — Christian encouragement for single women trusting God’s timing for love.

I slowed my steps and let those words sink in. It struck me that life’s waiting seasons often feel exactly like that — endless resistance, endless hoping. You pray, fast, believe, and still see little sign of movement. Maybe you’ve been praying for years for your future husband, or longing to conceive a child, and you’re weary from disappointment. You watch others receive their answers, celebrate their engagements, or cradle their newborns, and you’re happy for them — yet deep down, your heart aches. You start to wonder if something’s wrong with you, or if God has somehow forgotten. But the truth is, winds never blow in the same direction forever.

There’s something about a headwind that builds quiet strength. Every step demands endurance. Every prayer tests your perseverance. Every tear sown in faith waters the soil of a future harvest. The very resistance that feels like it’s holding you back is often what’s shaping your spiritual muscles to carry the blessing when it comes. God hasn’t abandoned you in the storm — He’s training you in it.

God has an appointed time. Just as weather patterns shift without our control, so do the seasons of our lives. You can’t force the wind to change, but you can trust the One who commands it. He knows exactly when to bring the right person, open the right door, or breathe life into what feels barren. One day, the resistance that once pushed against you will be the same force that propels you forward.

When my husband finally came into my life, it happened so suddenly that I could almost feel the wind change. What once felt impossible became effortless — a shift only God could orchestrate. There was no striving, no forcing, no manipulation — just peace, timing, and divine alignment. That’s what happens when His timing meets your perseverance. It wasn’t that the years of waiting were wasted; they had prepared me for the promise.

Looking back, I can see how every prayer, every disappointment, and every lonely evening were pieces of a greater story I couldn’t yet see. God had been working behind the scenes all along — aligning our paths, maturing my faith, and softening my heart to recognise His hand when the answer finally came. And just like that morning on the seafront, the gusts that once pushed against me became a gentle wind at my back, carrying me forward.

So if you’re in a season where trusting God's promises through the storm feels hard, keep walking. Keep praying. Keep trusting. The wind may be fierce now, but it’s not forever. The pressure you feel is not punishment; it’s preparation. God is using this time to strengthen your faith, refine your heart, and prepare your path. One day, the same stretch of ground that feels so heavy to walk will become a place you run across with joy.

Remember Galatians 6:9 — “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Your “due season” will come. The wind will change.

And when it does, you’ll know it was never random. You’ll look back and realise that even in the hardest days, God was working in the unseen — building you, blessing you, and steering you toward something beautiful. The resistance will fade, the way will clear, and the promise will stand before you, radiant in its right time.
